Title: From Blank Wall to Bold Statement: The Story Behind This Custom Fireplace Build

Every now and then, a project comes along that challenges you in all the right ways—creatively, technically, and logistically. This fireplace build was one of those projects. What started as a bare wall in a living room turned into a dramatic centerpiece that blends warmth, modern design, and subtle lighting into a jaw-dropping focal point. Here’s how I brought it to life—from sketch to final flame.

Chapter 1: The Blank Canvas

The homeowners wanted something more than just a fireplace. They envisioned a space that felt elevated and cozy—where the glow of a fire meets the clean lines of modern design. We stood in their living room staring at a beige wall, brainstorming ideas that could bring the whole space together. Floating shelves, LED lighting, natural wood tones, and a deep black shiplap came up—and we knew we had a concept worth building.

Chapter 2: Laying the Foundation

First up: framing the structure. I started by mapping out the footprint for the center column and hearth. Getting this part right is key—it determines how everything else aligns. The framing had to accommodate the electric fireplace insert while also supporting the paneling and the thick oak mantel and hearth elements.

Once the bones were in, I ran electrical for the LED lighting system, making sure each floating shelf would glow just right.

Chapter 3: Shaping the Character

The central panel was clad in sleek black shiplap—a bold choice that immediately created contrast against the neutral walls. It’s the kind of detail that commands attention but doesn’t overwhelm the room. Each plank was measured and installed with precision and emphasize the height of the space.

The floating shelves were crafted from solid white oak and finished in a natural tone to bring warmth to the design. I made sure each shelf was perfectly leveled and anchored to withstand the test of time—and curious toddlers.

Chapter 4: Lighting the Mood

This build wouldn’t be complete without the ambient glow that the homeowners dreamed of. I installed soft LED puck lights above and below each shelf. The result? A gentle halo effect that brings dimension to the entire wall and casts a cozy atmosphere when the sun goes down. The under-hearth lighting is one of my favorite touches—it almost makes the whole piece float.

Chapter 5: The Grand Finale

With the electric fireplace installed and flickering like a real flame, the room was transformed. The clean geometry, natural textures, and dramatic contrast created something far more than a fireplace—it’s a statement piece, an anchor for the room, and a warm invitation to stay a while.

Standing back and looking at the final result, I couldn’t help but feel proud. Not just of the craftsmanship—but of the collaboration, the design choices, and the little moments of problem-solving that got us here.

Projects like this are why I love what I do. They take a vision, a few raw materials, and a whole lot of skill—and turn it into something you can feel every time you walk into the room.

If you’re dreaming of a custom centerpiece like this for your home, let’s talk. Whether you’ve got a sketch, a Pinterest board, or just a vague idea, I’d love to help bring it to life.
