If you’re anything like me coffee is a necessity. I have a minimum of 16 ounces a day, but if I had my way it’d be significantly more. I’m not necessarily a coffee snob, because I’ll drink WaWa coffee and be just as happy as if I went to a fancy coffee shop in a downtown somewhere. So when one of my latest clients mentioned wanting to create a coffee bar for their home, I was excited to see what they had in mind.
In most people’s homes the space that can be dedicated to coffee is only so big, so we needed to maximize the functionality of the space. The client knew they wanted wine fridge and as much storage as possible. We ended up going with a three drawer cabinet on one side and a standard drawer and door cabinet on the other. We did add a pull out shelf in the bottom of the cabinet to make access to that space easier.
The client also mentioned the idea of adding the floating shelves and wanted to carry the new backsplash that we were installing from the kitchen into the coffee bar. So a pair of white oak shelves were floated and matched the custom mantle that had been made for the fireplace project. This was the inspiration, and now it was time to turn it into a reality.
The project began with the cabinets, if you haven’t seen my how to build easy cabinets video click this link to watch that now ( Easy Custom Cabinets). Once those cabinets are built and the face frames are made we can figure out the size of our drawers and doors. The easiest way to make sure you have the correct measurements is to put the slides you’re going to use against the inside of the face frame and measure from there. If you want to see how I made those drawers or how I make the doors, check out these videos. (How to Make Drawers. & How to Make Cabinet Doors )
Once the cabinets are put together it was time to make the shelves. The shelves are made from white oak lumber and from white oak 1/2″ plywood. The added character was done with some old saw blades and a grinder. This gives it a little bit of patina, so it seems like it’s seen some things over the years. The Floating shelves are done by adding a dado to the backside of the face of the shelf, then setting the plywood in after the miters have been glued to gather. For more detail I go into the shelf building process in this video:
So the shelves get hung, the cabinets mounted, then the countertop guys come do their thing and I come back for the backsplash. Tile is a pretty simple process once you get the hang of it. Look for a tile video to come out soon.
The coffee bar project was a fun project to do, a simple piece that makes the coffee area seem more intentional now as if it was there all along. That really is the reason that people want custom pieces in their houses, it makes it feel like they have a real say in how their house looks. Custom pieces are a way to make your house stand out and feel like it belongs to you. In a world full of cookie cutter homes, that have strict HOA rules, the inside of the home is where you get to put your finger print down. The possibilities are endless, and with custom woodwork we can make your house feel like a one of a kind!
